Beyond Praise and Criticism:
Giving and Receiving Authentic Feedback
for Sign Language Interpreters
Online Workshop - Summer Edition
Have you held back your honest feedback for fear of damaging your relationships with colleagues and clients? Have you observed incorrect interpretations or behavior that promotes audism and remained silent because you didn't know how to constructively address it?
If your answer is yes, this online workshop is for you.
Benefits
The question of how to address what we observe and contribute to change in a way that protects our values and relationships has been with me for years. It is only through Nonviolent Communication that I have found the tools to care for professional development, equity, integrity, community, and connection at the same time. There are few things I love more than sharing this with my community.
I developed "Beyond Praise and Criticism" especially for sign language interpreters to equip you with practical and tactical tools to integrate Nonviolent Feedback into you daily practice and gain confidence in giving, receiving, and asking for feedback on a regular basis. It shifts the feedback mindset from one of judgment to one of connection, creating a feedback culture that leads to higher performance and greater trust among colleagues and with clients.
Quality is ultimately maintained by people interacting with each other and continuously reinforcing best practices and standards. The skill of Nonviolent Feedback gives you the tools you need to give and receive authentic feedback while building trusting working relationships with your colleagues and clients.
Your Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training, you will be able to:
-
distinguish between evaluations and nonviolent feedback
-
formulate your honest feedback in a nonviolent way
-
offer your feedback while fostering collaboration and connection
-
translate criticism into nonviolent and actionable language
-
ask for appreciative feedback from colleagues and clients
About me
My name is Mareidi Pibernik and I have been working as a hearing sign language interpreter and lecturer in Austria for almost 15 years. I teach sign language interpreting and professional ethics at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz, at the university course Modus in Salzburg and have been working as a trainer for Nonviolent Communication (NVC) by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D. for several years.
My Approach
Theoretical input is followed by self-reflection and practical exercises in pairs and small groups. I will work with examples from the interpreter's professional life, you are welcome to bring your own anonymized examples to practice with and we will have time for your questions in all of the three sessions.
